The Marta Papers
Nobody at the table ever asked Marta to write anything down. She did it anyway — in the margins, on hotel stationery, on the back of place cards.
Most of it was never meant to leave the room it was written in. Some of it did. What follows is what we could piece together.
Somewhere along the way, her wardrobe started doing the same work as the diary. Every dress marks an evening she'd rather not fully explain.
Who is Marta?
We've asked. She changes the subject, or the country.
Does she actually exist?
Every dress in these pages does. Draw your own conclusions.
Why is she never in the same country twice?
We stopped asking. The postmarks never repeat.
Who are the letters written for?
Not for us. We just found them.
Has she ever fallen in love?
Once or twice, probably. She's never stayed long enough to be sure.
Why is there a dress in every story?
Because she was wearing one. That's usually where a story starts.
Why does she keep writing?
We don't know. We're just glad she does.
Ask to read what Marta leaves behind.
She doesn't write to everyone, and she doesn't write on schedule.
